Laravel integration via API is not just an HTTP request to an external service. In production, you need to consider authorization, data format, repeated events, rate limits, temporary unavailability, and error recovery.
The payment system, CRM, delivery service or marketplace work independently of your application. They may respond slowly, return a temporary error, or resend the webhook. A robust integration should expect this behavior and handle it without losing or duplicating data. Build Zone creates Laravel projects and integration for existing systems.
Start with a data contract
Identify the source of truth
If the price can be changed in both Laravel and CRM, a conflict resolution rule is required. Without it, the last request will accidentally overwrite the data regardless of whether it is correct. For each entity, it is necessary to determine where it is created, who can change it, in which direction the changes go, and by what key records are compared.
SKUs are often used for products and variants, but are only suitable when the value is unique and stable. It is also a good idea to store the record ID of the external system.
Describe the question and answer format
The API contract must specify field names, types, date format, currency, time zone, valid statuses, and error structure. The transformation of the external format into the internal model is better concentrated in a separate layer, and not distributed among controllers, commands and helper functions.
Before writing the code agree on exchange directions, required fields, conflict rules, and expected behavior during unavailability of the external service.
Laravel integration architecture
API client and service layer
Work with a specific service should be concentrated in a separate client. It is responsible for base address, authorization, headers, timeout, serialization and response parsing. The business logic should not know how the Bearer header is formed or which endpoint is used to update the client.
The service layer coordinates the script: downloads local data, calls the API client, stores the external ID, and captures the synchronization result. This separation simplifies tests — the real HTTP client can be replaced by a controlled response.
Queues and scheduler
An external API should not be called inside a user request unless its response is needed immediately. Order transfer to CRM, message or bulk catalog update can be done in queue. The user receives a response faster, and the failed task can be repeated.
Laravel Scheduler is suitable for periodic import of statuses and balances. Identical operations need to be protected from running at the same time, especially if a previous synchronization is still in progress.
Webhook
The webhook reports the event without constantly polling the API. The endpoint should quickly validate the request, capture the event, and queue the heavy processing. The sender can retry the webhook if it has not received the expected response, so retrying the same event should not create a second order or change the balance again.
API integration security
API keys, OAuth tokens, and webhook secrets cannot be written to Git, client JavaScript, or the public log. Server secrets are stored in environment variables or special storage. If the tokens of various connections must be in the database, they are encrypted and access is restricted.
- grant only necessary permissions to the key;
- use separate keys for different environments;
- transmit data only through a secure connection;
- check the webhook event signature, time, and ID;
- validate types, required fields, and valid values;
- don't log tokens and extra personal data.
Even an authorized client can send an incomplete payload. Validation and rights checks are required for every incoming request, not just for a public form.
How to avoid duplicates and survive mistakes
Idempotence means that repeating the same operation does not produce a new result. For an incoming event, its external identifier is stored. For the original request, use an idempotency key, if the service supports it, or a local record of the operation with a unique restriction.
A phone number or email is not a reliable order key: one customer can buy several times. A practical analysis is given in the material about transfer of OpenCart orders to KeyCRM.
Each external request must have a timeout. Temporary network errors, speed limits, or server failures should be repeated, but not an immutable payload validation error. A pause with increasing intervals is required between attempts; the title Retry-After, if it exists, should be taken into account.
After running out of attempts, the task should not disappear. It is moved to the list of failed operations, where the cause can be investigated and re-processed after correction.
API limits and high volumes
External services limit the frequency of requests. The integration should take into account the rate limit, use pagination and not create uncontrolled parallel requests. Large directories are processed in parts, and the synchronization position is saved to continue after an error.
If you only need to retrieve changes, it's better to use a modified date, cursor, event log, or webhook instead of loading the entire directory every time. For integrations with CRM, useful material about balance synchronization via API. If the store remains on OpenCart, available ready KeyCRM module.
Monitoring, recovery and tests
A successful HTTP response does not always indicate a completed business transaction. For synchronization, it is useful to store direction, local and external IDs, attempt time, status, controlled error description and correlation ID. Critical failures should generate a message to the responsible person.
Separately, a periodic reconciliation is required: whether all orders have an external record, whether the statuses match, and whether the operations have not remained in an intermediate state.
Tests should cover successful response, authorization error, invalid data, timeout, rate limit, temporary server error, webhook retry, and background task rerun. Laravel allows you to override HTTP responses, queues, and events, so much of the behavior can be tested without the production API.
Frequently asked questions
Is it possible to integrate Laravel with any service?
If the service has a documented API, webhook, or other available way of sharing, integration can usually be engineered. Actual capabilities depend on the platform contract.
Which is better: webhook or polling API?
Webhooks are faster to report an event and polls are easier to control. They are often combined: webhook for immediate changes, periodic reconciliation — to restore missing data.
Why the queue if the API responds quickly?
Speed may vary. The queue separates the external service from the user's request and allows a controlled retry of a temporarily failed operation.
How not to create duplicate orders?
Store a unique event ID, use an idempotency key, and add a unique constraint at the base level.
Can an existing integration be fixed?
Yes. You can start by auditing the code, contract, logs, and current bugs, and then determine the scope of a local patch or rebuild of the integration layer.
